From employment to engagement? Stable jobs, temporary jobs, and cohabiting relationships

Family formation has been substantially delayed in recent decades, and birth rates have fallen below the replacement many OECD countries. Research suggests that these trends are tightly linked to changes labor market; however, little is known about role played by increases job insecurity. In this paper, I investigate whether type of employment, stable or temporary, affects timing cohabitation fertility. Using French data on work family history large samples young adults, provide evidence being permanently employed a much stronger effect than temporary employment probability entering first cohabiting relationship as well having child. These findings suggest age at child can partly be explained rise unemployment share jobs among workers.
